Stories
Sharon Eubank's family decided to plant and grow landscaping trees as a way to earn money for the children's college and mission expenses. For 8 or 9 years, she and her siblings spent time nurturing and growing these children. However, they later learned that they had planted the trees too close together, so the root balls combined. This meant the trees were unable to be harvested, and they couldn't be sold for money. Sharon recalls being frustrated and the unfairness of it all. All her hard work had been for nothing. But, the tree farm now has become her "favorite place on the planet." Reflecting on this experience, she said that while the hard work didn't bring the blessings they wanted, she and her siblings were able to learn the value of hard work (4).
"You may not be in the situation you want. You’re health might be different. You don’t have what you long for right now, but waiting on the Lord is a holy position, and you are in some of the company of the best souls on earth." - Sharon Eubank
One Mother's Day, Sharon was leaving church and noticed a bunch of seeds scattered across the concrete. She thought, "They're exactly like you. You're the mother dropping seeds onto asphalt that will never grow" (4). She went on to share a gospel truth that helps her combat these intrusive thoughts. First, she began by acknowledging that there is grief involved in being single. But, she reminded herself that there are three things everybody is born to do. The first, freely choose God. Second, come to know Jesus Christ. And third, establish family relationships on both sides of the veil. There is no order to those three things. And they may come in a different order than we expect. However, she emphasized that if we are doing any of those three things, we are fulfilling the measure of our creation. Our greatest growth comes from disappointment and unfulfilled expectations (4).
After Kristin Yee had been with Disney for 13 years, she began feeling that she needed to leave. This was an extremely difficult decision for her. She didn't have another job opportunity, and didn't know how she would provide for herself if she left. No matter how hard she tried to make a new plan, nothing came together. But, she trusted in her promptings and left her job. Two months after she left, the studio she worked at shut down. The experience caused her to reflect on stability, "What we think is stability may or may not really be stable unless it's founded in our Savior and the Spirit and His voice" (3). When she finds herself worrying about how things work out, she remembers the prompting she has received many times, "It's not about that at this point; it's about trusting me" (3).
"I think about how Heavenly Father will give us what we really want in some way ... He does desire to give us the things we want because He’s a loving Father. And He’s perfect, and those characteristics are perfect. And He desires to see joy in our lives. He desires us to be happy. And so, I think we can expect and should expect wonderful and good things in our lives, though the timing may be different and how it looks may be different. But He has wonderful things in store for us." - Kristin Yee
